Cedar Park Dental Studio places crowns in 2 visits, 2 to 3 weeks apart. Each crown is shade matched to the neighboring teeth, and a well maintained crown lasts 10 to 15 years.

What to expect

Preparation visit (60 to 90 minutes)
The tooth is reshaped under local anesthesia, a digital scan replaces putty impressions, and a temporary crown goes on the same day.

Lab fabrication (2 to 3 weeks)
The crown is milled from zirconia or porcelain and shade matched. You wear the temporary and skip chewy or sticky food on that side.

Seating visit (30 to 45 minutes)
The temporary comes off, fit and contact points are checked, the crown is cemented, and the bite is adjusted until it feels like your own tooth.

Common questions
How long does a crown last?
10 to 15 years on average, longer with a nightguard if you grind. The cement seal at the margin, not the crown itself, usually decides the lifespan.
Crown or filling?
A filling repairs a small area. Once more than half the tooth is filling material, the remaining walls flex and crack; a crown covers the whole tooth and spreads the bite force.
Does getting a crown hurt?
Preparation runs under local anesthesia. The prepared tooth can be sensitive to cold for a few days under the temporary, and that settles once the final crown is cemented.
What is the temporary crown like?
A resin crown cemented lightly on purpose so it comes off at the seating visit. Skip gum, caramel, and hard nuts on that side for the 2 to 3 weeks you wear it.
